Courtesy Card Eligibility
The following are eligible to receive a free library courtesy card. To get the card, complete a courtesy card application.
- Eastern Michigan University Alumni
- City of Ypsilanti residents: Current driver's license or state ID with Ypsilanti address required.
- University faculty from colleges and universities in Michigan, with current faculty ID.
University of Michigan Reciprocal Borrowing Program
University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University students, faculty and staff are eligible for guest borrowing privileges at the other institution.
MelCat Visiting Patron
Visitors from libraries that participate in MelCat Visiting Patron may check out materials by presenting a currently valid library card from the participating library and a picture ID.
Purchasing a Card
Individuals who do not fit into any of these categories can purchase a Friends card for $25 per calendar year. Complete the courtesy card application.
- Courtesy cards must be picked up in person through a contactless pickup appointment.
- Applicants must be 18 years of age, and must have a valid driver's license or state ID card when applying for the card.
- Visiting borrowers must present their EMU courtesy card and a picture ID (either a valid state ID or a driver's license) when checking out materials.
- Borrowing privileges for courtesy card holders are valid until the end of the current semester. Exception: Purchased cards are valid for one calendar year.
- We will email you your account information within 72 hours of submitting the form. You can pick up your card during a scheduled contactless pick up.
Courtesy Card patrons may:
- Check out 5 items at a time.
- Check books out for 21 days.
- Renew their loan once.
- Check out Videos, DVDS, CDs, and audiocassettes for 3 hours.
Courtesy Card patrons may not check out journals, reference books, or any material on reserve.
Courtesy Card holders can not make Interlibrary Loan or MeLCat requests through the Library.
Visitors can access most online library resources from the express computers on the 1st floor, or on guest wifi using their own device.
Remote access:
- The library's subscription online resources are not available to alumni from off-campus. Vendor contracts limit off-campus access to currently registered EMU students, faculty and staff.
- Mel.org provides access to selected research databases to all Michigan residents.
- JSTOR's Register & Read service provides limited free access to articles.
- Many of the library's research guides include selected free online resources. A few guides have research recommendations for alumni:
